Training A Dog
Crate training a dog can make the
difference between success and failure when bringing a new canine
member into your home. We're here to help you with the
success.
Congratulations on your new
canine family member!
A
new dog, whether puppy or adult, is a joy but also requires a lot of
training to help them acclimate to your household routines and rules.
One of the keys to successful family integration and a great dog
training help, is dog crate training.
At first when
suggested to some owners, they think of crate training as being similar
to putting the pup in a cage like a wild animal – that it seems cruel.
It’s not. In the wild dogs take to caves and other small areas for
comfort. If used the right way a home crate can become that “cave” for
your dog that they’ll go to whenever they wish.
Crate
Training a Dog Has Several Advantages:
- It’s repeatedly been shown as successful for house training dogs
- It’s also successful for working out bad behaviors like chewing on
shoes
- Crates become a home away from home when you travel (giving the dog
protection too!)
- Crates offer your dog a private space to retreat to when scared or
uncertain
- Crates keep the dog away from potential household hazards when their
human owners are sleeping or away.
As a dog owner, you’ll find a crate is a fantastic tool for building
your relationship with your puppy as well.

Reminders:
Your
dog may have an accident in the crate even though dogs do not like to
eliminate where they sleep. If this happens its very important to
get
rid of that smell. Otherwise the dog may continue to mark
that spot.
When
crate training a dog, he should wear a break away collar for
safety. This type of collar comes off easily if it gets caught on the
cage at any location.
During periods of excessive heat crate training is counter-indicated.
When
using crates for house training make sure the dog eliminates before
going inside. (Patience is required here because this can sometimes
take a while.) This encourages success.
Keep children and other pets away from the dog’s crates. Dogs can
become protective of their lair.
