HAVANESE
The
Havanese is a happy, eager to please, dog. They make great
companion dogs as they love to be with their people. They
especially love children and are considered good for people with dog
allergies.
Quick Facts:
- Also known as Havanese Cuban Bichon and Havana Silk
Dog
- Belongs to the family of dogs called Bichons.
The French word Bichon Frise means "fleecy dog" or "curly lap
dog".

- The Bichon Havanese originated in Cuba, was preferred
pet dog of Cuban families.
- First showed at Westminster in 2000.
- Considered to be one of the non allergenic or
hypoallergenic dog breeds but
they do still release dander which can aggravate allergies.
- Utilized as: therapy dogs, assistance dogs, mold and
termite detection and as performing dogs (favorite circus dog).
Appearance:
- Coat is long, soft and silky. Adult coat
reaches 6 - 8 inches. Ranges from wavy to curly.
- Comes in colors: Black, Cream, Gold, White, Silver,
Blue and Tri-colors.
- Weight 7 - 13 lbs. and 8 -11 inches high

- Dark eyes and long tail are covered with long silky
hair.
Temperament:
- Very loyal and attached to their families.
- Curious, cheerful and sociable; gets along with
people, dogs and other pets.
- Sensitive by nature and gets feelings hurt easily by
harsh words and tone.
- Learns easily and loves to please and perform tasks.
Potential
Health Issues:
- Long-lived breed with few health concerns
- Can be prone to cataracts, luxating patellas and dry
skin
Special
Needs:
- Needs to be brushed regularly to release dander from
it's long coat.
- Needs
to be protected with a coat or sweater when outside in cold weather as
it's coat is not protective. Take care to remove any ice from
the
dog's paws after being outside. Do not leave outside for
extended
periods.
