LIST OF HYPOALLERGENIC DOGS 

                    

Compiling a list of hypoallergenic dogs was top priority in the White House shortly after President Obama took office.  President Obama had made a promise while on the campaign trail, not to his constituents but to his daughters.  He had promised the girls a dog but it was a tricky promise to keep because elder daughter Malia has allergies.

After questioning which breeds of dogs are hypoallergenic and careful research, the dog of choice was a Portuguese Water Dog, a gift from Senator Edward Kennedy who raises the breed. Good choice but any one of the following would be great dogs for people with allergies.  

Please remember, these dogs are considered hypo allergenic dogs, non-shedding dogs or dogs with hypoallergenic fur, but they may still not be good for people with severe dog allergies.  Most all these dogs still have some little thing that will affect people with dog allergies.  These dogs simply are the least likely to irritate and are therefore the best dogs for allergy sufferers.

• Poodle - One of the most intelligent of the breeds.   

• Affenpinscher - Called "Monkey Dog"  because of it's monkey-like expression.
  

• Maltese - One of the gentlest of toy dog breeds.
  

• Chinese Crested - Has no dog odor.
  

• Yorkshire Terrier - Independent & courageous.
  

• Schnauzer - Considered a "Velcro Dog"; Loves to be with it's owners.

• Portugese Water Dog - A muscular, medium sized dog.  Loves water.

• Bichon Frise' - Loosely curled coat, non-shedding.

• Bedlington Terrier - Looks like a little lamb, but has the heart of a lion.

• Silky Terrier - Affectionate and very sociable.
